EPDM Gasket vs Pile Weatherstrip: Choosing the Right Seal
EPDM vs Pile Weatherstrip: Start with Movement
When engineers ask about EPDM vs pile weatherstrip, the first question is not material preference. It is movement. In the sealing industry, EPDM gaskets are typically compression seals while pile seals suit sliding contact. XINHAI manufactures pile/brush weatherstrip for doors and windows; we do not manufacture EPDM gaskets. A drawing that shows a sash sliding past a frame is often discussed in relation to pile seals. A drawing that shows a leaf closing against a stop and compressing the seal is often discussed in relation to EPDM compression gaskets. That difference is a common starting point for seal discussions.
What an EPDM Compression Gasket Does
An EPDM gasket is an elastomeric profile. In general industry framing, it seals when it is squeezed between two surfaces as the window or door closes. The seal depends on compression: the gasket is deformed, and it pushes back against the frame and sash. In the sealing industry, compression seals are typically common on hinged, casement, and other closing systems where the final motion is perpendicular to the seal face.
The gasket can be extruded or molded into a custom profile. XINHAI does not make these profiles. For an EPDM compression gasket, the specification typically comes from a supplier that compounds and extrudes that material. In general industry framing, a pile seal is not typically treated as a drop-in substitute for a compression seal.
What a Pile Weatherstrip Does
Pile weatherstrip is a base strip carrying a dense brush of PP polypropylene yarn. It is not a solid rubber profile. It seals by creating a flexible barrier between two surfaces that slide or move slightly relative to each other. The pile fibers sweep against the mating surface and bridge the gap.
XINHAI's pile weatherstrip is available with silicone or non-silicone yarn, adhesive backing or no adhesive, and a plastic fin or plain pile. The fin can be same height, higher, or lower than the pile, and the fin material can be plastic or fabric.
Specs include base width 4-25mm, pile height 5-20mm, and base thickness 0.8±0.15mm. Length is customized. Finned versions add a plastic fin in the middle for a stronger wind and water barrier. For more on pile weatherstrip construction, see the product page.
Alibaba listings for pile weatherstrip commonly show applications such as French patio doors, balcony sliding doors, wooden doors, interior and exterior doors, shower doors, caravan/RV, and greenhouses. For a starting point on base and pile combinations, see the Pile Weatherstrip Selector.
Where Each Seal Wins: Sliding vs Hinged
In general industry framing, operable sliding sashes are often associated with pile seals. The sash moves parallel to the frame. A compression gasket in that interface is typically described as being dragged, sheared, or rolled unless the design includes a mechanism to lift or retract it. Pile is designed for sliding contact. It allows the sash to move while the brush follows the track or frame surface.
In general industry framing, hinged or compression seals are often associated with EPDM. The leaf swings and closes against a stop. The seal is compressed in the closing direction. A pile brush can be used in some secondary or wiping positions, but it is generally not treated as a compression seal. It is generally not treated as replacing the squeezed elastomer in a compression-stop design.
The same door or window system can use both. A sliding patio door may have pile in the sliding tracks and an EPDM compression gasket at a meeting stile or frame stop. A lift-slide system may use pile for the sliding path and EPDM where the sash drops into a compressed position. In general industry framing, they are often described as doing different jobs at different interfaces. XINHAI can supply the pile side. We do not supply the EPDM side.
Cost and Tooling Considerations
Cost is not just material price per meter. EPDM gaskets are often custom profiles. They may require a dedicated extrusion die or molded tool, and the profile geometry, compound, and finishing steps affect cost and lead time. Pile weatherstrip is built from a base profile plus pile yarn and optional fin or adhesive.
Supplier-stated figures for XINHAI include 20+ production lines, a 2000 sqm factory, and 300,000 meters daily capacity. Standard base and pile combinations can reduce tooling friction, but custom specs still need review.
For XINHAI pile weatherstrip, Alibaba listings show an MOQ of 20,000 meters and a reference price of $0.01/m. Treat listing terms as a starting reference, not a quotation. Final MOQ and price depend on base width, pile height, yarn option, adhesive, fin, length, and packaging.
If you compare EPDM vs pile weatherstrip on price alone, you may miss the interface requirements. A seal selected only on price that does not match the movement type can create callbacks. Tooling also follows the interface. A compression gasket needs a die that matches the compression land and closing geometry. A pile seal needs a base that fits the groove, a pile height that bridges the gap, and a fin or adhesive strategy that holds the strip in place.
How to Choose EPDM vs Pile Weatherstrip from a Profile Drawing
In general industry framing, one common starting point is the movement direction. A drawing showing movement parallel to the seal face is often discussed in relation to pile seals. A drawing showing movement perpendicular and compressing the seal against a stop is often discussed in relation to EPDM.
Then check the groove and contact surface. For pile, a typical industry check is the groove width and depth. Match the base width to the groove. XINHAI offers base widths from 4-25mm. Match pile height to the gap you need to bridge; XINHAI offers pile heights from 5-20mm. Check base thickness, 0.8±0.15mm. If the drawing shows a fin, decide whether the fin should be same, higher, or lower than the pile, and whether plastic or fabric fin is required. Confirm whether the yarn needs silicone or non-silicone treatment. Confirm adhesive backing or none.
For EPDM, look for the compression percentage, the compression land, and the closing force budget. Those details come from the gasket supplier and the system designer. XINHAI does not provide EPDM gaskets, so we cannot quote that side. We can review the pile side and help you avoid a misapplied brush seal.
In general industry framing, when the drawing shows both a sliding channel and a compression stop, the two interfaces are often treated as separate seal positions. XINHAI can discuss the pile side; EPDM details would come from an EPDM supplier.
