Pile Weatherstrip for Sliding Doors: Selection Guide
Sliding door weather stripping fails or succeeds at a few predictable points: the meeting stile, the interlock, the top track, and the bottom track. Unlike a hinged door, a sliding panel does not compress its seal with a cam or latch. The seal is carried along a track and dragged against a mating surface. That single mechanical difference drives every specification decision that follows. This guide covers where pile sits on a sliding door assembly, how sliding friction trades against sealing, silicone-treated and non-silicone pile options, when a finned profile suits exterior doors, and how to match base width to a track groove from 4 mm to 25 mm.
Where Sliding Door Weather Stripping Sits on the Assembly
Meeting stiles and interlocks. On a two-panel or multi-panel slider, the meeting stile is where one panel's edge meets the other. Pile usually sits in a continuous groove running the full height of the stile, facing the opposing panel or an interlock fin. The gap here is fixed by the hardware, not adjustable once the door is hung, so pile height must bridge that gap without stopping the panels from passing each other. This is a common source of callbacks: too tall, and the panels drag or the interlock will not close flush; too short, and the seal leaks exactly where two panels meet.
Top track. Pile here is a light seal against the track head or top rail, cutting air movement and dust migration. It runs the full panel width and sees little abrasion.
Bottom track. Bottom pile seals the gap between the bottom rail and the track or threshold. It sees the most abrasion of any position because the panel travels directly over it and debris collects there. Do not oversize bottom pile — an over-tall bottom seal lifts the panel, adds drag, and wears fast.
Sliding Friction vs Sealing: The Tradeoff
Pile weatherstrip is a light-contact seal, not a compression gasket. It works by presenting a brush face against a surface, not by being crushed into a groove.
Interference — how far the pile is deflected by the mating surface — controls both sealing and drag. More interference tightens the seal against air, dust, and noise, but raises normal force at the contact face, and higher normal force means higher sliding resistance.
This matters more on sliding doors than hinged doors because the operator feels it directly. Breakaway friction is always higher than sliding friction, so a seal that feels acceptable mid-travel can still be stiff on the first push. Set pile height so the brush contacts the mating surface along the full travel, with the minimum interference that closes the gap. Add interference only where leakage is a real problem — exterior doors facing wind, or gaps that vary because the track is not level.
Silicone-Treated Pile Options
Pile is available in silicone-treated and non-silicone options. On the supplier-stated product page, silicone is described as multi-channel silicone oil treatment, better waterproof effect, anti-aging ingredients, elastic pile, and more than 50,000 frictions without deformation. That is the basis for the silicone wording; no additional friction-reduction or shape-retention claims are made here.
Specify silicone or non-silicone as a discrete option on the drawing or ask about it on a quote. Silicone treatment is a yarn specification, not an assumption. Non-silicone remains available when the specification calls for it. Our pile weatherstrip profiles list the treatment as a discrete option.
Finned Pile Options for Exterior Sliding Doors
Finned profiles combine pile with a plastic fin in the middle; fin material can be plastic or fabric. For exterior sliding doors, a fin adds a stronger wind and water barrier.
Fin height can be the same as pile, higher than pile, or lower than pile:
- Same height as pile.
- Higher than pile.
- Lower than pile.
The fin material and fin-to-pile height are specification options. State them on the drawing or quote.
Sizing Sliding Door Weather Stripping: Base Width to Track Groove
This is where most specification errors occur. Base width spans 4 mm to 25 mm, base thickness is 0.8 ± 0.15 mm, and pile height spans 5 mm to 20 mm. Pile width varies by code — for example, 6.9 (4P): 2.9±0.3mm; 4.8 (4P): 1.9±1.5mm. Base margin, the unbrushed flat section, also varies by spec.
Measure the groove, not the old strip. Use calipers at several points along the profile; extruded aluminium and PVC move, and anodizing or powder coating adds build-up that changes effective groove width.
Fit rules:
- Continuous groove, strip pulled in from the end: slip fit, base width at or just under groove width.
- Short groove, strip pressed or rolled in: slight interference holds the strip without adhesive.
Base margin matters at corners and where hardware passes through the groove. If the strip must stop short, state the margin required. Choose adhesive backing when there is no usable groove and the strip mounts to a flat face; that face must be clean and dry, because the bond, not the groove, carries the load.
Replacement vs New-Build Specification
Replacement work starts from the failed part. Record base width, base thickness, pile height, pile width, fin presence and fin height, silicone or not, and whether adhesive backing was used. One caution: a groove that held the original by friction may now be worn or contaminated, so a base width that was correct when new can be loose today.
New-build work starts from the drawing and the hardware. Specify seal geometry first — plain pile, or pile with a fin, and the fin-to-pile height relationship — then the insert method, then length. Length is customized to your requirement.
Typical Applications
Alibaba listings for this product line show French patio doors, balcony sliding doors, wooden doors, interior and exterior doors, shower doors, caravan and RV, and greenhouses. Grouped by requirement:
- Exterior sliding (balcony, patio): finned or silicone-treated pile, tighter interference, wind and water priority.
- Interior sliding: plain pile, light interference, noise and dust priority.
- Non-door sliding (shower, caravan/RV, greenhouse): short runs, adhesive or friction fit, silicone or non-silicone as specified.
Ordering Notes
Supplier-stated factory figures: 20+ production lines, 2,000 m² of floor area, and daily capacity of 300,000 meters. MOQ is 20,000 meters per Alibaba listings, with a listing price shown at $0.01/m — treat that as listing-level only; price moves with spec, silicone treatment, fin option, and base dimensions. ISO 9001 was announced in company news in April 2019; we do not claim current certification and we publish no certificate numbers.
