Wool Pile vs PP Pile Weatherstrip: Material Comparison

Wool pile weatherstripping and PP pile weatherstrip are not interchangeable by default. The choice depends on moisture exposure, compression cycles, substrate, cost target, and whether the project requires natural fiber or synthetic yarn. This comparison is written for door/window engineers and purchasing managers. XINHAI manufactures PP polypropylene pile weatherstrip for doors and windows. We do not manufacture wool pile weatherstripping. Where wool is discussed below, it is general industry knowledge, not a XINHAI product claim.

What Wool Pile Weatherstripping Is

General industry knowledge: wool pile weatherstripping traditionally uses natural wool or wool-blend fibers held in a backing, often with a fin. It has been used in timber windows, heritage/restoration work, and interior door systems where natural fiber is preferred.

Wool is a natural protein fiber. It can absorb and release moisture. In pile form, repeated wetting and drying can lead to matting, felting, or changes in compression recovery. It can also hold dust and requires cleaning attention. These are general material behaviors; exact performance depends on blend, density, backing, fin, and installation. We cannot quote wool pile as a XINHAI product.

What PP Pile Weatherstrip Is

XINHAI manufactures PP polypropylene pile weatherstrip for doors and windows. It is a pile/brush weatherstrip using PP polypropylene yarn.

Options include silicone or non-silicone; adhesive backing or none; plastic fin or plain pile. Standard spec range: base width 4–25 mm; pile height 5–20 mm; base thickness 0.8±0.15 mm. Pile width varies by spec; quote the applicable D pile-width code when specifying. Fin height can be same as, higher than, or lower than pile. Fin material can be plastic or fabric. Length is customized. Base margin varies.

Features are anti-wind, anti-noise, and anti-dust.

Supplier-stated factory data: 20+ production lines, 2,000 sqm, daily capacity 300,000 meters. On Alibaba listings, MOQ is shown as 20,000 meters and price shown at $0.01/m. Confirm current commercial terms. Markets: domestic China 50%; Africa 15%; South America 10%; South Asia 10%; North America 5%; Eastern Europe 5%; Southeast Asia 5%.

Typical applications seen on Alibaba listings include French patio doors, balcony sliding doors, wooden doors, interior/exterior doors, shower doors, caravan/RV, and greenhouses.

How PP Pile Behaves

Moisture resistance. PP is a synthetic polypropylene yarn. Unlike natural wool, it does not absorb water in the same way. That is useful in exterior doors, windows, and humid environments. It does not remove the need for drainage, correct clearance, or a compatible sill/threshold design. If water is trapped against any pile, performance will suffer.

Resilience. PP pile is chosen for repeat compression cycles in doors and windows. Recovery depends on yarn, pile density, pile height, base, fin, and the gap it seals. A pile that is too short may not contact the surface; a pile that is too long may be over-compressed and lose recovery. Specify the gap and tolerance, not only the pile height.

Cost. Request quotes to compare; material follows the profile drawing and spec. XINHAI’s Alibaba listing shows $0.01/m and MOQ 20,000 m; treat that as a listing reference, not a universal price. Confirm current commercial terms.

Silicone and backing. Silicone (supplier-stated, product page): multi-channel silicone oil treatment, better waterproof effect, anti-aging ingredients, elastic pile, more than 50,000 frictions without deformation. Non-silicone is also available. Adhesive backing or none affects assembly. Plastic fin or plain pile affects sealing geometry. None of these options replaces a correct base width, pile height, and groove fit.

Where Wool Pile Weatherstripping Is Traditionally Used

General industry knowledge: wool pile weatherstripping is traditionally associated with timber windows, heritage/restoration projects, interior doors, and some older sliding systems. It is often selected when the specifier wants a natural fiber or is matching an existing assembly.

In wet exterior exposure, synthetic PP pile is commonly specified instead. For shower doors or other constantly wet areas, validate any pile material with the full system, because a pile seal alone is not a water-management design. XINHAI does not supply wool pile; if wool is mandatory, source it from a wool pile specialist.

Wool Pile vs PP Pile: Comparison Table

| Factor | Wool pile weatherstripping | PP polypropylene pile weatherstrip |

|---|---|---|

| Material | Natural wool or wool-blend fibers (general industry knowledge) | PP polypropylene yarn (XINHAI product) |

| Moisture handling | Absorbs/releases moisture; can mat or felt with repeated wet/dry cycles (general industry knowledge) | Low moisture absorption; hydrophobic fiber; moisture management still depends on drainage and system design |

| Resilience | Natural crimp can recover, but moisture, dirt, and compression history affect it (general industry knowledge) | Synthetic yarn resilience; specify density, height, base, fin, and gap; over-compression can reduce recovery |

| Cost | Request quotes to compare; material follows the profile drawing and spec. | Request quotes to compare; material follows the profile drawing and spec. XINHAI listing shows $0.01/m and MOQ 20,000 m—confirm current terms |

| Fit scenarios | Heritage/restoration, timber windows, interior doors, low-moisture applications where natural fiber is preferred | Exterior/interior doors, French patio doors, balcony sliding doors, wooden doors, caravan/RV, greenhouses; verify shower/wet areas |

| Options | Depends on wool pile supplier | Silicone or non-silicone; adhesive backing or none; plastic fin or plain pile; fin height same/higher/lower than pile; plastic or fabric fin; custom length |

Specifying Material on an RFQ

State the material first: wool pile weatherstripping or PP polypropylene pile. Then give dimensions and options.

For a PP pile RFQ to XINHAI, include:

  • Base width: 4–25 mm range available.
  • Pile height: 5–20 mm range available.
  • Base thickness: 0.8±0.15 mm.
  • Pile width / base spec: state the applicable D pile-width code or another spec.
  • Fin: plastic or fabric; fin height same/higher/lower than pile; or plain pile.
  • Surface treatment: silicone or non-silicone.
  • Backing: adhesive or none.
  • Length: customized.
  • Base margin: state your required margin.
  • Application: door/window type, interior/exterior, expected moisture, sliding or hinged.
  • Gap and tolerance: the actual sealing gap matters more than pile height alone.
  • Quantity: MOQ shown on Alibaba listings is 20,000 m for XINHAI PP pile.
  • Acceptance criteria: any required dimensions, sampling, or test method. We do not cite test data here because none is verified in this document.

If wool pile weatherstripping is required, mark it clearly. XINHAI will not present wool pile as our product. We can quote PP polypropylene pile weatherstrip and help you compare where PP is suitable.
